Question

Which of the following scenarios could lead to the phenomenon known as self-ignition?

Bacterial action in a haystack

Lightening striking a house

Faulty wiring in a home

A clock used as a time delay mechanism

Overheating of a car engine

This analytical tool operates on similar principles to liquid chromatography and is gaining use as a tool to analyze explosives.

GC

CE

IR

HPTLC

MS

If a fire that is burning with a limited supply of oxygen is suddenly ventilated, this may occur:

Incomplete combustion

Flame point

Flash point

Explosion

Flashback

Which method of isolating fire residues involves the use of charcoal strips?

Headspace

Adsorption

Absorption

Solvent extraction

Gas chromatography

A paint can has two tubes that can trap accelerants. Air is pumped through one tube into the can; headspace vapors are pulled out through the other tube. What technique does this describe?

Solid phase extraction

Headspace

Thin Layer Chromatography

Adsorption-Elution

Steam distillation

High explosives:

Have detonation rates of 2,000 to 3,000 fps

Take place at optimal efficiency

Require the use of an explosives trains

Include black powder and ANFO

Possess a fuel and oxygen that are chemically combined

Which of the following conditions is not necessary for a fire to occur?

Heat

Oxygen

Fuel

Accerlerant

Chain reaction

Select the true statement.

A high order explosion may occur due to old, out-of-date explosives.

Fragmentation effects are generally the least damaging of the effects of an explosion

A vapor trace analyzer is a type of specialized GC that is optimized for explosives analysis

Black powder is comprised of sulfur nitrate, potassium and charcoal

Explosions are always more damaging than fires

A number of characteristics are used to locate the point of origin of a fire. The destruction of a surface due to heat or other factors is called what?

Low burning

V-patterns burning

Charring

Spalling

Material distortion

Infrared spectrophotometry…

Is similar in some ways to HPLC

Can differentiate TNT and DNT

Provides only a tentative identification

Employs Greiss reagents

Has problems analyzing explosives due to high temperatures

Bacterial action in a haystack

Lightening striking a house

Faulty wiring in a home

A clock used as a time delay mechanism

Overheating of a car engine

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1= The autoignition temperature of a substance is the lowest temperature at which it spontaneously ignites in normal atmosphere without an external source of ignition, such as a flame or spark. This temperature is required to supply the activation energy needed for combustion. Thus the answer could be overheating of car engine that may lead to sufficient increase in temperature too self ignite the material. Or the Bacterial action in a haystack may also lead to self ignition depend upon type of bacterial process(whther it lead to increase in temp or not.)

Ans 2= Gas Chromatography it is more analogous to Liquid chromatography and is widely used for explosives ex at air ports.

Answer 3=

The sudden addition of oxygen-rich air to a smoke-filled and fuel-rich atmosphere can result in a sudden flashover or a backdraft.

Answer 4 = Accelerants leads to high rate of combustion but does not require for occurence of fire. Fuel, Heat(ignition source), oxygen and chain reaction(in some cases) are necessary for fire to occure.
