Question
Labeled Percent Acidity: 5%
Measured pH: 2.3471
[H+]=4.4968x10^-3 (so .004968)
Acetic Acid Average Ka: 2.823x10^-5 (so .00002823)
I just need help finding the Concentration of acetic acid in commercial vinegar and the percent acidity in the commerical vinegar.
Labeled [H+l Measured pH Percent Acidity Table 3 of Data and Results. Calculate the average Ka for acetic acid from your data in Table 2. Acetic Acid Average Ka Using your Average Ka for acetic acid and the data in Table 3, calculate the concentration (co) of acetic acid in the commercial vinegar. Show your work. Co (M) Calculate percent acidity in the commercial vinegar. Show your work. AcidityExplanation / Answer
With 5% acetic acid in vinegar (w/v) means,
5 g acetic acid in 100 ml water
molar concentration of acetic acid in vinegar = moles of acetic acid/volume of solution
= 5/60 x 0.1
= 0.83 M
Ka = [CH3COO-][H+]/[CH3COOH]
1.8 x 10^-5 = x^2/0.83
x = [H+] = 3.86 x 10^-3 M
Thus,
% acidity of commercial vinegar = 3.86 x 10^-3 x 100/0.833
= 0.46%
