Question

1.000 g of an organic molecule that contains only carbon and hydrogen bums completely in the presence of excess oxygen. It yields 0.0333 mol of CO_2 and 0.599 g of H_2O. Find the empirical mass of the compound. The molecular mass was determined experimentally to be 84.159 g/mol. What is the molecular formula? [C_6H_12] Balance these equations, and identify the type of reaction H2O(l) rightarrow H2(g) + O2(g) Zn(s) + Au(aq)^+ rightarrow Zn(aq)^2+ + Ag(s) Hydrochloric acid reacts with a solid chunk of aluminum to produce hydrogen gas and aluminum ions. Write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction. What type of reaction is this?

Explanation / Answer

The reactions of Carbon and hydrogewn with Oxygen to form CO2 and water is as follows

C+O2-àCO2,   H2+0.5O2-------àH2O

0.033 moles of CO2 consumes 0.033 moles of Carbon

Moles ofwater in 0.599gm= 0.599/18=0.033

Moles of H2 required =.0.033

Moles of H required =2*0.033=0.066

Molar ratio of C: H=0.033:0.066 =1:2

Emirical formula is CH2

Given molecular weight of compound =84

Molar mass of empirical formula= 12+2=14

Hence 14*n= 84, n= no of   empirical formulas

Hence n=6, the formula id C6H12.

H2O(l) ------>H2(g)+1/2 O2(g), decomposition reaction since water is decomposed

Zn+2Ag+ ---->Zn+2+2Ag ( ionic equation)

2Al+6HCl --->2AlCl3+3H2 ( here H in HCl is replaced by Al. Hence it is single replacement reaction
