Question
#4 & #5 A graph of mass % sugar versus density of solution produces a linear line with a positive slope. The equation of the line is y = 0.0045x + 0.997. What is the mass% of sugar in a solution that has a density of 1.022 g/mL? Separate the components of a water-insoluble mixture of barium sulfate (BaSO_4) and nickel (II) carbonate (NiCO_3). Chemicals provided to aid in the separation and recovery of the 2 component mixture are HCl_(aq) and K_2CO_3(aq). Provide a balanced chemical equation for each reaction that is performed and write an explanation for each step. The physical and chemical properties arc given below.Explanation / Answer
5 . Ans:
NiCO3 + 2HCl --- NiCl2 + CO2 + H2O
NiCO3 reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to produce nickel chloride, NiCl2, and carbon dioxide which comes off as a gas. Barium sulfate, BaSO4 is not soluble in HCl.
The nickel chloride forms a green solution in
water and when the solution is drawn off, you can recover the NiCO3 by adding
potassium carbonate to the nickel chloride. Nickel carbonate will precipitate out of
the solution leaving Potassium chloride behind in solution.
NiCl2 + K2CO3 -- NiCO3 + 2KCl
