Question

For 29, please explain how you would find the distance from the starting point to the center of the solvent in order to calculate RT (retention time).

Gas Chromatography and Simple Distillation. What is the percentage of the higher boiling point component in the distillate? 29 Calculate the distance to the center of peak A and the retention time. (You do not need a ruler to answer this question. All the information is provided.)

Explanation / Answer

28. From the above two sheets

boiling point of components in increasing order : C < D < A < B

B is the highest boiling component in sheet 1 and D is highest boiling component in sheet 2

area A = 1/2(20 x 6) = 30 mm^2

area B = 1/2(6 x 5) = 15 mm^2

percentage higher boiling B = 15 x 100/45 = 33.33%

area C = 1/2(8 x 4) = 8 mm^2

area D = 1/2(25 x 10) = 125 mm^2

percentage higher boiling D = 125 x 100/133 = 93.98%

29. Retention time is defined as the distance between the component and the solvent

For A, RT = distance at center of component - start center of solvent peak

Similarly RT for other components B, C and D can be calculated

So, like for C, RT = 20 mm - 0 mm = 20 mm
