Question
Sapling Learning Quantum numbers arise naturally from the mathematics used to describe the possible states of an electron an atom. The four quantum numbers, the quantum number (n), the angular momentum quantum number (t), the magnetic quantum number (mr), and spin quantum number have strict rules which govem the possible the values. Identify allowable combinations of quantum numbers for an electron. Select all that apply. n 3, t 2, mr 0, ms +1/2 n 3, t 2, m 0, ms 1/2 1/2 1/2 n 5, 4, mi 4, mst 1/2Explanation / Answer
Answer. 1) n=3 ,l=2, ml =0,ms=+1/2 is allowed.
2) n=3 ,l=2, ml =0,ms=-1/2 is allowed.
3) n=4 ,l=4, ml =0,ms=-1/2 is not allowed,because for a given n value possible l values are n-1.
4) n=4 ,l=0, ml =1,ms=-1/2 is not allowed ,because when l=0 ,ml=0.
5)n=5,l=4, ml =-4,ms=-1/2 is allowed.
6) n=2 ,l=1, ml =0,ms=0 is not allowed, because spin quantum number of an electron must be either +1/2 or -1/2 but not zero.
