Question

Which compound in each pair (i. e., A or B) is most polar? Briefly explain your choice. Which compound in each pair (i. e., A or B) has the highest boiling point? Briefly explain your choice. Intramolecular interactions are important factors in stabilizing/locking in conformers. Molecule A has two possible conformations such that one conformation is much more favorable in its stabilizing influence when compared to the other. Draw the structure for the more favored conformation and briefly comment on the stabilizing factor (s). Indicate whether molecules A - D are identical, enantiomeric, diastereomeric or structural isomers when they are all compared to the Lead Compound given below. Explanation / Answer

ans 7 .

in first pair, Structure B is polar and A is non polar

B is polar because it is a cis dichloro difloro ethene which has unsymmetrical distribution of electronegative atoms around its double bond which creates a dipole moment whereas the trans isomer has symmetrical distribution ans hence remains non polar.

in the second pair B structure is polar and A is non polar.

A is cyclopentane and lacks carbonyl group whereas B is cyclopentanone which possess carbonyl group. The oxygen atom of the group being electronegative than carbon and hydrogen , creates a dipole moment which imparts polarity to the compound.
