Question
Section PRE-LAB QUESTIONS EXPERIMENT Redox Reactions: Detecting Traces of Blood l 25 1. Plant peroxidases, proteins that contain heme and catalyze the oxidation of organic compounds by hydrogen peroxide, can interfere with tests for blood or hemoglobin. Heating samples to 100 "C for 20 minutes can deactivate plant peroxidases. Why should you not be surprised that these plant enzymes can interfere with tests for blood? 2. Find MSDS for phenolthphalein and leucomalachite green on the Internet. What health concerns are provided? What precautions should you take in handling these substances? Copyright 2017 Pearson Education, Inc.Explanation / Answer
1. Plant peroxidases are hemoproteins that have the prosthetic group ferriprotoporphyrin. Plant peroxidases have a much higher enzymatic activity than Hb. Because of differences in the Apo proteins of the two molecules the Hb Apo protein does not survive transit through the gut.
2.
