Question
Arrange Pb, Mg, and Zn in order of their activities, listing the most active first. (1) ____ (2) ____ (3) ____ Arrange Cu, Ag, and Zn in order of their activities, listing the most active first. (1) ____ (2) ____ (3) ____ Arrange Mg, H, and Ag in order of their activities, listing the most active first. (1) ____ (2) ____ (3) ____ Arrange all five of the metals (excluding hydrogen) in an activity series, listing the most active first. (1) ____ (2) ____ (3) ____ (4) ____ On the basis of the reactions observed in the six test tubes, explain why the position hydrogen cannot be fixed exactly with respect to all of the other elements listed in the activity series in Question 5. What additional test(s) would be needed to establish the exact position of hydrogen in the activity series of the listed in Question 5? On the basis of the evidence developed in this experiment: (a) Would silver react with dilute sulfuric acid? Why or why not? (b) Would magnesium react with dilute sulfuric acid? Why or why not?Explanation / Answer
2. Activity of the metals depends upon the oxidation tendency such that higher the oxidation potential higher will be the reactivity.
oxidation potential is defined as the tendency of an elecrode to loose electrons in its solution.
1. Mg 2. Zn 3. Pb
Most reactive metal is Magnisium because it has more tendency to loose electron E( oxidation potential) value is very high in comparision to other metals
3.1. Zn, 2. Cu 3. Ag
4. 1. Mg 2. Ag 3. H
5. Most active metal to least active metal reactivity is as follows:
1. Mg 2. Zn 3. Pb 4. Cu 5. Ag
6. Activity of a metal is defined as the tendency of the metal to loose electron.which dependent on the oxidation potential ( power of the electrode to loose electrons in its solution) and as a result Hydrogen taken as standard potential which is zero bench mark. Metals which are showing higher potential or above Hydrogen which are active metals and other are less active therefore this is the reason that Hydrogen did not get the fixed position in the activity series.
7. Test which proves that the position of the hydrogen in the reactivity series is the reacton of metals with dilute sulphuric acid. all metals displces the hydrogen from sulphuric acid which having higher oxidation potential.
Mg+ H2SO4 -------> MgSo4 + H2
Zn+ H2SO4 --------> ZnSO4 + H2
Pb + H2So4 ---------> PbSo4 + H2
so it shows that Hydrogen has in between value of oxidation potential .
8. (a) Ag does not react with the dilute sulphuric acid.because the oxidation potential value of the Ag is less than that of Hydrogen. it means Ag can not displace the hydrogen. oxidation potential for Ag is -0.80 V, Oxidation potental of Hydrogen is 0.
Ag + H2SO4 ---------> NO REACTION
(b) Mg reacts with the dilute sulphuric acid because its oxiadtion potential is greater than the hydrogen.so its easily displaced the Hydrogen . Oxidation potential of Mg = 2.37 V and Hydrogen = 0 V.
Mg + H2SO4 ---------> MgSo4 + H2
