Question
Arnery A cardiologist measures the flow of blood during heart surgery with an electromagnetic flow meter (shown to right). Electrodes A and B make contact with the outer surface of the blood vessel which has a diameter of 3.0 mm. 5. To oluneter Blood Electrodes-Bnow a) For a magnetic field magnitude of 0.040 T, a potential difference of 160 uVolts appears between the electrodes. (note: The potential difference implies an electric field E = V/d points from the high potential to the low potential side.) What is the speed of the flowing blood? Is electrode A correctly shown to be the positive electrode? Would this assignment depend on whether the mobile ions in the blood are predominantly positively or negatively charged? Explain answers, don't just state yes or no. b)Explanation / Answer
(a) Velocity of charged particle moving through electric and magnetic field
v = E/B
And we know that E = V/d
hence
v = V/Bd = (160*10-6) /(0.04*3*10-3)
= 1.33 m/s
(b) Yes it will depend upon the charge of ion, because flow of ion
decides the direction of current.
And the force due to the magnetic field depend upon the direction of current.
Therefore sign of charge of ion will change the answer.
