Describe the homeostatic response to a reduction in extracellular calcium concentration. Include the names, actions, and sources of the hormones involved. Describe the potential physiological consequences if calcium concentration remained low?Explanation / Answer
Calicum homeostatis ;
it is the process of reduction of the extracellular concentrations of the calium ions . when concentration of calium is low it is called hypocalcemia, if it is high it is hyper calicemia, these ions are stabilized by the voltage gated ions ,opening of the channels occur when the there are low levels of calium , involuntary muscle spams due to hypocalcemia called hypocalcium tetany . when there is more of the ions ,hypercalcemic it causes the calcium deposits in blood vessels .
endocrine regulation of hormone ;
the most important hormones involve are parathyriod hormone and activ e formof vitamin D , theregulation is done by the negative feeback mechanism .PTh is stimulated by the hypocalcemia , the process occur in three stages
1. bone reabsorption
2.calicum reabsorption when there is loss in urine
3. calicum reabsorption in small intestine
Bone reabsorption ,occurs when the PTH hormone is released when the calicum ions are low in ECF , stimulates the osteoblats to pump ions out of the cells . osteoblats have a receptors for the PTH hormone .it is continous process .
PTH in kidneys ; it has two effets one is the calicium reabsorption , it prevents the loss of the calium ions through the urine .and other effect is stimulation of production of vitamin D which helps in calicium absorption by the small intestine .
physiological consequences if calcium concentration remained low;
hypocalicemia ; when concentartion of the calicium ions are more in ECF than in bones .when there is low levels of caliuim it has many affects shuch as neurological , cardiovascular ,respiratory ,psychiatric ,
neurologically ; dementia ,sezuires , tetany , muscle cramps etc
cardiovascular ; hypotension in the blood vessels ,bradycardia,cardiac failure ,
respiratory ; branchospams , laryngiospams
psychiatric ; anxity ,depression , dementia,irritability .
these are the physiological effect of the hypocalcemia .
