Question

Provided Figuer 7.15

end of the question. Optional: so I posted a question before which involve reasoning but I didn't really get a satisfying answer and I've been looking for a while.

question: If high pressure is applied to a compound MX, which structure, CsCl or NaCl, would be favored?

FIGURE 7.15 The 14 Bravais lattices are composed of seven essential unit cells: cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, rhombohedral, hexagonal, monoclinic, and triclinic. (P primitive or simple: I body-centered; F face-centered C* base-centered.) Simple Body-centered Face-centered cubic (P cubic (I) cubic (F) Simple Body-centered Simple Body-centered tetragonal tetragonal orthorhombic orthorhombic (P) (I) (P) (I) Rhombohedral Hexagonal Base-centered Face-centered orthorhombic orthorhombic (C) (F) (R) (P) Simple Triclinic (P) Base-centered monoclinic (P) monoclinic (C)

Explanation / Answer

CsCl is body centered cubic lattice, which has packing fraction of 68 %

whereas NaCl face centered cubic lattice, has packing fraction of NaCl is 74 %

At high pressure the structure which has higher packing fraction will be favoured, so NaCl structure will be favoured.
