Question

I found the right answer somewhere else on chegg, but my question is, how do you know that this molecule will take a proton from the water molecule? I drew it this way because the directions say to draw the mechanism when the acid reacts with water. So in this case, it sounds like the directions are saying that the water molecule is the base and will accept a proton from the carbon molecule, not the other way around (which is what the correct answer really wanted). Please explain this to me!

Explanation / Answer

The question should be

"Draw a detailed, stepwise mechanism for the proton transfer reaction that occurs when each of the following acids/bases react with water."

In the present example, the C compound has unit negative charge.

If water molecule is the base and will accept a proton from the carbon molecule, then the C compound will have two negative charges and it will not be neutral. This is not possible.
Note: when a proton is lost by carbon compound it will develope -1 charge. It already has -1 charge so ttoal -2 charge.

When carbon molecule acts as a base and accepts a proton, it will be neutral.
