need help on #8 show work and why ? please
Explanation / Answer
mass of steam = 120 gm, moles = mass/molar mass = 120/18= 6.67
Initial temperature = 150 deg.c
1. First the steam has to be cooled from 150 deg.c to 100 deg.c, this is sensible heat= mass* specific heat* temperature difference
Specific heat of steam = 2.108 J/gm.deg.c
hence heat to be removed = 120*1.996*(150-100)= 11976 Joules=11.976 KJ
2. Heat need to be removed in the form of latent heat to convert steam at 100 deg.c to liquid at 100 deg.c, This heat is = moles* latent heat of vaporization of steam ( in J/mole)=6.67*40.8 Kj/mole =272 Kj
3. at 100 deg,c liquid need to receive sensible heat up to 0 deg.c , this is = 120*4.184* 100 = 50208 Kj= 50.208 Kj
4. at 0 deg,.c, one needs to supply heat of fusion, this heat is = 120 gm*334 J/gm= 40080 Joules= 40.080Kj
5. from 0 deg,c to -15 deg.c, it is sensible heat and this is =120*2.108*15= 3794 J= 3.794 Kj
total heat to be removed = sum of heats remove from 1 to 5= 11.976+272+50.208+40.080+3.794=378 Kj
