Question

Explore the patterns in the elements as you go across the rows and down the columns in the periodic table for the various ionization energies in the tables you are given. Discuss this with your partner. You will be asked to give the patterns you found, and the rationale you used to propose the pattern(s). Use the following tables to answer questions #9 and #10. Identify any patterns in the first energy as you go down a column (a family or group) and as you go across a row (a period) in the table. Give your rationale.

Explanation / Answer

As we go down the group we observe that the first ionization energy of elements decrease . The trend is oberved bothe in alkali and alkaline earth metals.

The decreease in IE down the group can be attributed to the entry of last electron into a new shell, that is size increases much more than the effectiv enuclear charge. other factor is the attainment of stable octet configuration, which makes the first IE of alkali and second IE of alkaline earth metlas lowered.

Along a period from left to right , there is a overll increase in the ioniztion energy of elements except at Al.

The reason is the introduction of vacant d orbitals and the configuration 3s2 3p1 which can easily remove one electron to become more stable configuration.

The overall increase in first IE can be rationalised by the addition of electron progressively into the same orbit, but increase in effective nuclear charge.
