I would like to discuss about tsunamis that can occur in my community. Tsunamis are triggered by an earthquake that occur under the surface of ocean. This results in the formation of giant waves few reaching heights of over 20 meters. These waves when they reach coastal regions cause tremendouscdamage to both life and property. Tsunami warning centers have been set up by the government if various countries after the devastating tsunami of the Indian ocean of 2004 that killed nearly three lakh people. This can be further improved by giving early warning signs and disseminating the information as soon as possible through television and radio. Scientists like sesimographers and marine biologists are involved in the study of how mangrove forests in the coastal areas can decrease the impact of these tsunamis.
