Question
Buffer capacity is a measure of a buffer solution's resistance to changes in pH as strong acid or base is added. Suppose that you have 195 mL of a buffer that is 0.380 M in both formic acid (HCOOH) and its conjugate base (HCOO–). Calculate the maximum volume of 0.470 M HCl that can be added to the buffer before its buffering capacity is lost.
I've seen a few other questions like this on here that have been notably wrong. I would appreciate multiple attempts/answers just in case please! Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
conjugate base millimoles = 195 x 0.380 = 74.1
for maximum buffer capacity the conjugate base millimoles should be equal to strong acid/base millimoles
74.1 = HCl millimoles
74.1 = 0.470 x V
V = 157.7 mL
maximum volume of HCl added = 157.7 mL
