Question

Let's say that there are fingerprints or other type of dirt on the outside of the cuvette. What effect would this have on the % T readings? _____________ Why? What effect would this have on the Absorbance? ____________ Why? Would this cause the reported equilibrium constant to be too high or too low? ____________ Why? If the % T reading is less that 3%, it is difficult to obtain accurate readings. Assume you had a solution that was giving a % T reading of less than 3 % What could you do to obtain accurate % T readings? For this question, assume that the cuvette is clean and the correct blank was used.

Explanation / Answer

5a) %T readings will decrease as more and more light will be absorbed by the dirt and less will be transmitted and hence hence transmitted light will be detected.

b) Absorbance reading will increase beacuse of the dirt particles absorbing more light passing through it than would have been absorbed by cuvette alone.

c) From Beer lambart's law, A =abc

a = molar extinction constant

b = thickness of solution or path length travelled by light

c = concentration

Now as "a" is proportional to "A", an increase in A will lead to increase in "a".
