Question
You are working at the U.S. Patent Office and an application for a patent comes to your attention. This
has been given to you based upon your expertise in the sciences. This patent claims that a new catalyst
has a much better approach than the Haber catalyst for the production of ammonia. This catalyst leads to
much greater equilibrium conversion of N2 and H2 into NH3 under the same conditions. What is your
response to this patent? Denied or accepted, also explain your decision.
Base on the effect of Catalyst on equilbrium system.
Explanation / Answer
The patent should be denied as the catalyst can not increase the yield of a reaction. It can not affect the equilibrium constant. It only changes to rate constant of a reaction. So the claim is false
