Question
Two separate green solutions were made by combining a stock yellow solution with a stock blue solution. Both mixtures were made in a single well of a 12 well strip similar to what was used in lab. Mixture A: 1 drop of a 0.105% yellow solution + 3 drops of a 0.07% blue solution. Mixture B: 1 drop of a 0.105% yellow solution + 3 drops of a 0.07% blue solution + 3 drops of water. What is the concentration of blue dye in solution B? True or False, if mixture "A" and mixture "B" are viewed from the side, they will be the same intensity green. True or False, if mixture "A" and mixture "B" are viewed from above, they will be the same intensity green.
Explanation / Answer
The dilution is prepared by mixing the different solutions, we have to find for how much is the solution is being made Here for example take a 1 ml solution is being made for this
yellow solution = 1 x 0.105% = 0.105%
blue solution = 3 x 0.07% = 0.21%
Volume water being added to it after adding both the solution= [1 - (0.105 +0.21)]/3 = 0.228
Concentration of blue dye = Volume of Dye / Volume of solution= 0.21/ 100/ 1= 0.0021
Each standad dye available in the lab has with its concentration. Every starting has a different concentration lable to it, so the dilution made will have different concentration. If we suppose the concentration of blue dye standard as 4.0 x 10-6 M so it has the concentration for 0.21% in the solution as
Concentration of the blue solution = 0.0021 x 4.0 x 10-6 = 8.4 x 10-9M
2) False, if mixture A and mixture B viewed from the side they will not be of same intensity as green as they both fall beside the green absorbance in the colour wheel and these colour get distingushed when seen from side.
3) True, as both mixture have colour that fall beside the green colour in the colour wheel and when seen from above they both show the same intensity as green.
