Question

What is the theoretical yield of CoII(salen) complex and MnIII(salen)(AcAc) complex?

Synthesis of CoII(salen) complex

• In a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask, stir 5 mmol H2salen (1.34 g) in 40 mL of ethanol under reflux (boiling).

• Add 5 mmol cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate [CoII(OAc)2•4H2O, 1.24 g] slowly.

• After stirring for 30 min, let the solution cool to near room temperature. Pay attention to the color change during this step.

• Determine the yield of the dry solid.

Synthesis of MnIII(salen)(AcAc) complex

In a 50 mL beaker, stir 2.0 mmol H2salen (0.54 g) in 10 mL of ethanol under reflux (boiling).

• Add 2.0 mmol manganese(III)acetylacetonate [MnIII(AcAc)3, 0.70 g] slowly.

• After stirring briefly for about 5 min, let the solution cool to near room temperature, then add about 10 mL of water (all at once), with stirring.

• Recover the solid product by suction filtration through filter paper in a Büchner funnel on a filter flask.

Explanation / Answer

Yield of CoII Salem is = (wt of Co(II) salen/mol wt of Co(II) salen)×(100/no of moles of H2salen)
