Question

A piston-cylinder system undergoes compression from state 1 to state 2. The compression can occur either by Process A or Process B as shown in the figure below. Which of the following statements is correct? The boundary work done on the system is higher for Process A compared to Process B The boundary work done on the system is higher for Process B compared to Process A The boundary work done by the system is higher for Process A compared to Process B. The boundary work done by the system is higher for Process B compared to Process A. The boundary work done on the system is the same for Process A and Process B.

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER

During compression work is done on the sysem not by the system. Hence option (c) and (d) are incorrect. Further if more work is done in any path (suppose A), then if we can go to initial state by path B some energy will be stored in the system. We can the repeat such cycles to create energy. All this is against law of conservation of energy. Hence Option (e) is the correct answer.
