Shown below is the partial structure of a steroid. r (a) How many tertiary carbon atoms are present? CH (b) How many quaternary carbon atoms are present? (c) What are the orientations of the hydrogens A and B? Circle one both are same contorneton to tell which? both hydrogens are axial (i) both are equatorial (iii)HA axial and HB equatorial (iv) He axial and HA equatorial TURNOVER Copyright K. Ponnamperuma Chem Exam 1 2016 FallExplanation / Answer
Answer is both hydrogens are axial
The hydrogen bonds in the vertical plane are aligned in the direction of the axis, and are called axial bonds. Those bonds in an approximate horizontal plane circling the equator of the molecule are called equatorial bonds.
In other words those hydrogens which are perpendicular to the plane of the structure are axial ones , and which are nearly in the plane are called equatorial ones
Here Ha and Hb both are perpendicular to the plane .. so thet are axial ones
