Derive the predicted rate laws for each of the six reaction mechanisms proposed

ID: 477115 • Letter: D

Question

Derive the predicted rate laws for each of the six reaction mechanisms proposed for the reaction studied in the Kinetics l experiment. Show all work. NOTE: Since these are aqueous reaction mixtures, the amount of water in the solution is much greater than any of the reactants (the molar concentration of pure water is 55.5 M). This concentration will not change significantly as the reaction proceeds, therefore the concentration of water in the reaction mixtures is constant. Since it's a constant, you can combine [H2oj with the rate constants in Kobs. As an example: rate kik20H20][HBrl[Cl2] kobs[HBr][Cl2] for an aqueous reaction mixture.

Explanation / Answer

.In a series of reactions for explaining the mechanism of heterogeneous reactions, the slowest step is the rate determining step. Hence for the reaction -r = K[IO3-] [I-]2 [H+]2

2. for the reaction rate –r = K[HIO3] [HI]

3.For the reaction –r = K[I2O2] [I-], [I-] is an intermediate which can be eliminated from   eq.1

4. for the reaction, -r = K2[ H2I2O3]

5.For the reaction, -r = K4[IOIO][I-]

6. for the reaction, rate = K4[IOIO]
