Write the following elements in order of increasingly negative electron affinity: Be, O, F, Ne and explain why

Explanation / Answer

As, N, P all belongs to the group VA ofp-block, i.e.- the last electron enters into p-orbital and in all the three cases the valecnce orbitals contain five electrons. However, while moving from N (1st period) , P (2nd period)and As (3rd period) the atomic size increases (down the group) i.e.- the force of attraction between the nucleus and the last electron decreases and hence the 1st ionisation energy decreases.
