Question
1. Write short paragraph discussing why the 20% Acetone solvent would not effective for
separating the halide ions.
2.The more polar mobile phase is the 20% acetone solution (since it is 80% water). Paper is made from cellulose which contains a lot of oxygen atoms and OH groups. Write a short paragraph discussing which solvent best separated the ink components from the Vis-a-Vis pens. Consider in your discussion the relative attraction of the ink components for the solvent and for the paper. Does your discussion support the statement that these pens are water soluble.
Explanation / Answer
(a) A 20% acetone solvent contain 80% water which means it is a polar solvent overall.
And For a halogen alkane to dissolve in water you have to break attractions between the halogen alkane molecules (van der Waals dispersion and dipole-dipole interactions) and break the hydrogen bonds between water molecules. Both of these cost energy.
(B) Ink is a mixture of several dyes and therefore we can separate those colors from one another using chromatography. When ink is exposed to certain solvents the colors dissolve and can be seperated out. When we expose a piece of paper with ink on it to a solvent, the ink spreads across the paper when the ink dissolves.
Some inks are water-soluble, so you can use water as the solvent. Inks which are not water soluble are often alcohol-soluble and you can use isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol) as the solvent to create your chromatograph.
Different ink pens use different types of ink and this is obvious when you expose the ink to a solvent.
