Question
Shown here is a curve of the distribution of kinetic energies of the molecules in a liquid at an arbitrary temperature. T. The lines marked A. B. and C represent the point where each of the molecules for three different liquids (liquid A. liquid B. and liquid C) has the minimum kinetic energy to escape into the gas phase. Write a brief explanation for each of your answers to the questions that follow. Which of the molecules -A, B, or C - would have the majority of the molecules in the gas phase at temperature T? Which of the molecules -A, B, or C - has the strongest intermolecular attractions? Which of the molecules would have the lowest vapor pressure at temperature T?Explanation / Answer
a) C bcz higher kinetic energy means that the molecules are move faster and can move freely.that means probably they are in gas phase.
b) A bcz their kinetic energy low means they cannot move freely.so the molecules can be attract together by intramolecular interactions.
c) A bcz the molecules are bound together by intermolecular interactions.so it need more energy to breakdown those and goes to the vapor phase.so at a given temperature it gives lower vapor pressure.
