Question
Balance the following equations: Fe + AgNO_3 rightarrow Fe(NO_3)_2 + Ag V_2O_5 + CaS rightarrow CaO + V_2S_5 ZnSO_4 + Li_2CO_3 rightarrow ZnCO_3 + Li_2SO_4 C_2H_6(g) + O_2(g) rightarrow CO_2(g) + H_2O(g) C_4H_6O_2(l) + O_2(g) rightarrow CO_2(g) + H_2O(g) Name the following ionic compounds: Mn_2(SO_3)_3 Ni(ClO_2)_2 CuSO_4 Mg_3P_2 Li_3PO_4 Write the chemical formulae for the following compounds: Titanium (II) acetate Copper (I) carbonate Calcium carbonate Iron (III) nitrate Chromium (III) hydroxideExplanation / Answer
Answer 1 Each element /ion on each side should be written separately.
Then One by one atoms should be balanced by adding coeficients.
For problem 1 (a) steps will be
Fe + AgNO3 =====> Fe(NO3)2 + Ag
Fe: 1 Fe: 1
Ag: 1 Ag: 1
NO3 : 1 NO3 : 2
So first we need to balance NO3 by adding a coefficient 2 to AgNO3 on Left side.
Now we have
Fe + 2AgNO3 =====> Fe(NO3)2 + Ag
Fe: 1 Fe: 1
Ag: 2 Ag: 1
NO3 : 2 NO3 : 2
Now there are 2 Ag on left side but only one on right side, so we need to balance Ag by adding coefficient 2 to it on right side . Now we have
Fe + 2AgNO3 =====> Fe(NO3)2 + 2 Ag
Fe: 1 Fe: 1
Ag: 2 Ag: 2
NO3 : 2 NO3 : 2
Thus this reaction is balanced now.
We follow same steps for rest of equations.
(b) V2O5 + 5CaS =====> 5CaO + V2S5
(c) Same
(d) 2C2H6 + 7O2 =====> 4CO2 + 6H2O
(e) 2C4H6O2 + 11O2 =====> 8CO2 + 6H2O
Asnwer 2 (a): We know that charge on SO3 ion is -2. There are three sulphite ions thus total charge on three sulphite ions will be -6.
There are two Mn atoms. Therefore each Mn atom will possess +3 charge to form a neutral molecular formula. Oxidation state of cation is mentioned while writing the name of molecular formula. Thus name of Mn2(SO3)3 will be Manganese(III) Sulfite.
Same rules are applied for rest of molecular formula.
(b): Nickel(II) Chlorite
(c): Copper (II) Sulphate
(d): Magnesium phosphide
(e): Lithium Phosphate
Answer 3. We use criss cross method here to get molecular formula from name.
Titanium is in +2 oxidation state and acetate ion has -1 charge on it thus molecular formula will be
(f) : Ti (OCOCH3)2
(g): Cu2CO3
(h): CaCO3
(i): Fe(NO3)3
(j): Cr(OH)3
