Question
a)Draw a flowchart to find mass percent of a solution if you were given molality of that solution. Do you need any another additional information? Explain your reasoning.
b)Draw a flowchart to find mass percent of a solution if you were given molarity of that solution and its molar mass. Do you need any another additional information? Explain your reasoning.
c)Draw a flowchart to find molality of a solution if you were given molarity of that solution and its molar mass. Do you need any another additional information? Explain your reasoning.
Explanation / Answer
a) molality is the moles of the solute/Kg of the solvent. and mass % = gms of solute/grams of solution.
first step: Convert moles to g. suppose x
second step: add this g to 1000 gm of solvent = gms of solution suppose y
third step: (x/y )* 100 = mass % of the solution
The first step would require the use of molar mass. so, it should also be given
b) molarity is moles/L of the solution.
step 1: convert moles to g suppose this is x
step 2: convert l to ml
step 3: Check the density of the solution and then convert L to gm y
step 4 : (x/y ) * 100
We require density for this in order to convert the L of the solution to g of solution
C)molarity of the solution is given.
step 1: We can find moles (x) (making an assumption, we had used 1 L of the solution)
step 2: convert moles to g of the solute
step 3 : Now, convert L of the solution to gms of solution using density
step 4: substract g of solute from g of solution to get g of solvent
step5: convert g to Kg (y)
step 6: x/y is going to be the molality of the solution
Again we require density here to be used in step 3
