Question
Watch the YouTube video "RSA Animate - Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us" posted by The RSA. This video has been adapted from Dan Pink's talk at the RSA, which illustrates the hidden truths behind what really motivates us at home and in the workplace. Identify an example of intrinsic rewards and extrinsic rewards from the RSA Animate video clip. Then GIVE examples of your own extrinsic and intrinsic rewards. Review the “Remember This” summaries in Chapter 12 on pages 528 and 534 and complete the Self-Learning “What Motivates You?” in Chapter 12 on page 535.
Explanation / Answer
The example was the repeated experiments conducted by the MIT – with 3 types of rewards – small cash reward for low performers, medium cash reward for average performers, and large cash awards for excellent and outperformers. Surprisingly, the cash reward system worked only for the mechanical tasks “the higher the pay, the better was the performance” – but for the tasks demanding the cognitive and rudimentary skills, the reward system did not work as expected.
Rather autonomy, leaving them self directed, and ability to take their own decisions, ability to work autonomously worked remarkably.
Examples of my own extrinsic and intrinsic rewards.
Extrinsic rewards are given out physically and are tangible and measurable. It comes from outside – examples include cash reward, trophy, medal, badges, certificates etc.
But intrinsic rewards are from the inside – it is the satisfaction and knowledge that the job was done right.
Intrinsic motivation needs autonomy, being master of the subject knowledge, having a purpose, and having relative knowledge.
But the extrinsic motivation includes both the intrinsic rewards and the extrinsic rewards.
