Explanation / Answer
Compare culture clashes or basic differences that could account for possible miscommunications
This is based out of my personal experience where I have seen big cultural clashes and basic differences arising out of it and have created miscommunication between the individuals. There were incidents where I tried to connect with people who are from different cultures and I literally offended them out of my approach and the way I have had a conversation with them. I may not know all the details about other cultures, but applying my knowledge in the way I have heard from other people, I tried to communicate. There were few words which we could say and interact with each other in our culture. But in the same way, when I tried to apply the same concept for other cultures, nobody liked it and they infact felt offended about the same. I travelled to one of the Muslim countries and I greeted them with dialects in their language, I knew what did it mean, but they felt offended as they were not allowed to accept this gesture who doesn't belong to their culture. I was unaware of this fact because in our country we do exchange these dialects with the community it is originated from and they are completely ok with the same. However, I felt really surprised as I was not really expecting this from the person there. This really taught me the way I should actually react and be conscious while conversing with any other culture members as there may be few hidden facts associated with it which we do not really know about or unaware of.
Apart from the culture and the religion difference issue that I faced, I also came across a situation where there were language barriers. I was being sent on an assignment in China and have been asked to implement a new software solution for the organization. During this project, I was also asked to train the users. The users included the warehouse staff, sales staff and executives. The top notch team members were good in English and could communicate well with me, but with the ground level staff, it is a sin to expect from them to have a conversation in English. And they have not to be blamed for the same, it is because of the way they are asked to consider English while studying. Nobody is allowed to study English, if they do not choose to pursue higher education and that remains as the reason to stay out of context from the language itself.
Ways to adapt and overcome such differences to enhance intercultural proficiency in your current role or in a hypothetical situation you develop:-
1. One should be extra conscious and should choose the dialects based upon assessment of the audience, he/she is going to interact with.
2. One should be prepared with materials and stuff to overcome a deadlock situation of language barrier. What can help in this regard is the indication and the signage with presentation skills that speaks for itself and minimum language intervention is required.
3. It would be better to have meaning and context of basic words used in every culture to avoid conflict of thoughts and interests and the offence.
4. One should apologize in terms of any kind of issues when conflicts come up.
