Coach X: Effective Hospital Administrator

Assume that you are a member of the search committee that is evaluating applicants for the position of administrator of a 300-bed community -owned hospital in your city. In examining the applicants’ resumes, you note that most have had experience in health care settings, many having previous experiences as administrators or assistant administrators.

One application, however, is quite different. It is from one of the most successful college football coaches in the country, someone we will call X. Being a sports fan, you have seen this person many times on national television as his teams have consistently placed in the top 10 NCAA ratings. He has won five national championships in the past 15 years. His school leads major colleges in athlete graduation rates, throughout his 30-year coaching career, his program have not been charged with a single NCAA violation. He has won the national coach-of-year title four times. He has mentored countless assistant coaches who themselves have become successful. His former players have been among the NFL’s biggest stars. E has charisma and is a gifted motivational speaker. No one is more highly respected in the profession. Serving also as athletic director during the past five years, he oversees a 57 million budget and 400 employees, and the university's athletic department is one of the most profitable in the country. President Bush and Obama have named him to important presidential commissions. He has often been courted by Democrats and Republicans as an easily winnable gubernatorial or U.S. Senate candidate. Why is he interested in the position of head administrator of the hospital? In his application, he states that it was always his ambition to change careers by age 55. While acknowledging his lack of experience in the health care field other than through hospital stays with family, players, and friends, he would love the challenge of hospital management.

Explanation / Answer

1.

Yes, in my opinion, X should be considered as a viable potential candidate for the hospital administrator experience, despite his limited technical expertise, because he posses skill set that would fit perfectly into a administrators role.

He has previously successfully managed big budgets and a vast workforce, of 57 million budget and 400 employees. Also, he has the people skills that are a prerequisite for an administrator’s job. His glorious and stain proof 30 year career showcases his ethical working methodology, and his mentored assistant coaches becoming successful implies he is a believer in efficient succession planning, and knowledge sharing, hence he can be an asset to the hospital in the future.

As far as his knowledge about the hospitals working and procedures are considered, he can be given basic on job training, and gradually he could gather the required knowledge of the hospital. Due to his decorated experience, he will also be able to bring funds and will become a potential face for the organization’s community health plans, giving the hospital more recognition in the community.

2. For the hospital’s computer technology department, X would not be considered a viable candidate, as he does not possess the technical skills needed to handle the department. In his past experience, he has shown administrative skills, and has excelled in them. But he has not shown any IT skills, or any computer technology related skills in his past experience.

3. Applicant X has the skill of ethically managing a big team, and huge budgets. This skill would aid the organization in either of the positions, as both the position will be benefitted by his people skills and team management.

4. Applicant X has had previous relationships with his team consisting of 400 employees, football player, assistant coaches and important presidential commissions. His previous relationships all needed effective people and team working skills, and this is a much needed skill within the hospital. If he becomes the hospital administrator, in order to manage a team of doctors, nurses, and other staff members, and to keep them on the same page, while making ethical decisions, X’s experience from his previous relationships, will help him translate into the needed relationships within the hospital.
