Virtual teams are formed by members who are separated geographically, but work together on a project or for a unified goal, communicating with each other, through the help of internet or other such technologies.
Training virtual teams is a challenge, because many traditional training methods that organizations use are bound by the physical presence of the trainee, for example a classroom lecture training, needs the trainee to be present in the classroom. Being said that, there are certain traditional methods which can be used to train virtual teams, with a bit of tweaking.
Some of the traditional training methods that can be used for training virtual teams are:
Online training: It is just like classroom training, but the lecture is given with the help of films, videos or blogs online to the trainees, instead of them being assembled in a classroom. Video conferencing can also be used to impart training to all the team members at once, if all of them have technical knowledge and systems to support video conferencing.
Simulations: There are many simulation software available, which can be used to impart training to the team members. The simulation software work on internet hence can be accessed from any location. Hence, the team can work and hence get training on the software from their respective locations.
Role playing: The team members of the virtual team can be assigned different roles, based on the real work situations that they will face when they work together on a certain project. They can communicate through web for the role playing exercises, just like they do when working in virtual teams.
Case studies: Case studies provide an effective way to understand different situations that the team members could face, and help them analyse what they could do, by understanding what other team had done in that situation. Case studies can be shared with the virtual team members online, and they can then study it, and later discuss it online with the team members to share their view points and get feedback from each other.
