Question for a genetics class. Please help. Can't figure out how to do this question. 4. A strawberry farmer determines that the average weight of individual strawberries produced by plants in his garden is 2 g. He selects the 10 plants that produce the largest strawberries; the average weight of strawberries among these selected plants is 6g. He interbreeds these selected strawberry plants. The progeny of these selected plants produce strawberries that weigh 5 grams (25 pt). a. What is the narrow-sense heritability, h^2, for strawberry weight (10 pt)? b. If the farmer were to select plants that produce an average strawberry weight of 4 grams, what would be the predicted weight of strawberries produced by the progeny of those selected plants (10 pt)? c. Briefly, in words, define h^2 (5 pt).Explanation / Answer
a. Here we can use the equation
R is response to selection which is obtained by difference between mean of progeny of selected parents and mean of starting population.
R = 5 g – 2g = 3g
S is selection differential which is obtained by difference between mean of selected parents and mean of starting population.
S = 6 g – 2g = 4 g
Substituting these values in equation
b. If the selected plants average weight is 4 g then S would be 2 g
Than
= 1.5 g
According to the above illustrated value the predicted average weight of strawberries produced from parent plants would be 2g + 1.5 g = 3.5 g
c. Heritability (h2) is defined as the ratio of additive genetic variance and phenotypic variance.
