Explanation / Answer

I strongly feel that privacy is invaded and compromised through use of social networking sites like Facebook, Orkut, Twitter etc. People use social networking sites to share personal information about themselves with their friends and relatives. This type of information is not available for everyone. But many a times privacy is invaded and compromised and personal and private information are accessed by people for whom such information is not intended to be shared in the first instance. Another factor is that several small and start ups networking sites sell personal data of the users to advertisers.

Yes, allowing personal information to be available to others without a user's specific permission unethical. This is because it results in a breach of trust and is against the wish of the users. The user has shared his/her personal information on the understanding that it will not be made available to others and by doing thus the social networking sites are indulging in unethical behavior.

Yes, the network users should do more to protect user's privacy. They should invest in more sound technology that will prevent and hinder privacy and protect user's confidential information. They should also have strong set of internal control policies and measures that will prevent such instances of privacy.

I believe that the sites be free to develop as they want to meet the needs of users but government should regulate aspects like privacy issues, identity thefts and other forms of cyber crime in which the information of the user can be used for an unintended and unauthorized manner.

Users have equal responsibility for protecting their own private information. First of all they should only use trustworthy social networking sites, where the chances of privacy are very limited. Secondly, they should be careful about the type of information they are providing and sharing. Only essential and required confidential and private information should be shared. Lastly, users should properly and smartly use passwords and other forms of data protection being provided by the social networking sites.
