Why is healthcare considered a social problem? You may discuss this issue from a domestic or international perspective. Include in your answer the definition of a social problem in Chapter One and how healthcare does/does not relate. You can answer this question from the perspective that healthcare is or is not a social problem. Further, you may choose to explore healthcare from several different perspectives, including but not limited to the following: access to healthcare, specific types of health conditions, specific populations.

Social problem can be defined as a condition that arises when society is not in an ideal situation. It is the discrepancy between the elements of the society which has the potential to endanger the lives of social groups.

In this context, healthcare is indeed a social problem in many parts of this world. Take the case of USA. Its citizens do not have the privilage of enjoying a universal and comprehensive health care system. As a country, America has the highest number of uninsured citizens in the industrialized world.

In many developing nations in the world like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, African countries a large part of population consists of people living below the poverty line. This chunk of the population do not have access to proper healthcare. In such countries, higher social class means greater access to health care facilities and lower socioeconomic status leads to lower chances of access to quality healt care.

Unavailability of proper health care can infringe on the desired quality of life. This can result in intergroup conflicts. There is a need for health care reform across the world. There is a glaring need for the health care facilities to be cost effective and for universal coverage.
