Question
It’s been suggested that traditional department stores no longer have the same strong appeal to younger American consumers that they once enjoyed during their heyday in the last half of the 20th Century. What types of retailers are causing this competitive pressure? In 2004, Sears bought the Kmart chain, with great anticipation that the combined forces of the two chains would be highly successful in the American marketplace. Based on your experience and any online research that you might choose to do, how do you think the merger is working out? Who are their most significant competitors today? What recommendations would you make to help Sears to improve their profitability in the future?
Explanation / Answer
Ans: Sears is a 5 star department store in America .As a part of the acquisition, Kmart Holdings Corporation would change its name to Sears Holdings. The new corporation announced that it would continue to operate stores under both the Sears and Kmart brands. In 2005, the company began renovating some Kmart stores and converting them to the Sears Essentials format, only to change them later to Sears Grands. atleast the merger helped them to stand with the Walmart, Best buy, Target . There were many retailers that are giving tough competition to Sears like walmart, best buy, target & Home depot.
Recommendations:
1) Sears has to do surveys to know the likes of present younger generation . Based on that survey thay have to come up with the products that are hig in demands in order to increase sales and make profit.
2) Sears has to do reality check that what walmart and other retailers are providing which make them market leaders.
3) they have to change thier strategy and do some diversification also
