Question
A work center has five jobs assigned to it. They are labeled, in the order of their arrival in the shop, as jobs A, B, C, D, and E. The work center may work on only one job at a time and must complete any job it starts before starting another job. Job A has a processing time of 6 days and is due to the customer in 9 days. Job B has a processing time of 2 days and is due in 16 days. Job C has a processing time of 4 days and is due in 10 days. Job D has a processing time of 3 days and is due in 7 days. Job E has a processing time of 5 days and is due in 12 days. Using the shortest operating time priority rule, what will be the average lateness of these orders?
Explanation / Answer
As the Shortest Operating time priority rule is to be followed, the jobs will be completed by the workstation in the ascending order of their operating times.
As explained in the table above, job B will be done first as it has the least operating time and the job will be completed on the second day. There will be no delay in this job as the due date is the 16th day.
After Job B, job D will be done which will be completed on the 5th day (2 days for Job B and 3 days for Job D). For Job D also there will be no delay as the Job is required in the 7th day.
Progressing in similar fashion for the remaining jobs, we find that there is delay of 2 days for Job E and 11 days for Job A.
Hence, the average lateness of the orders is = (2+11)/5 = 2.6 days
Job Operating time Due Date Day of Completion Delay from the due date B 2 16 2 0 D 3 7 5 0 C 4 10 9 0 E 5 12 14 2 A 6 9 20 11Related Questions
