You are the Director of Emergency Management for the county. A tornado has just ripped through the county and left a disaster scene. Rescue efforts are underway to assess the damage, which is estimated to be several millions, and to locate the injured and deceased. As the Director, you are leading the recovery efforts.

Recently the text and lecture material have focused on task oriented leadership and relationship oriented leadership. Which would you use in this situation? One or the other or both? Why? In answering this question, provide your step by step plan in assessing the damage and beginning clean-up efforts.

For this assignment, make sure you answer all of the aforementioned questions and do so with detail.

Explanation / Answer

Before jumping into solution we need to keep in mind certain aspects that are involved in this case.

Loss of innocent lives and property,

Rapid action force required for injured,

Bringing city back to normal

Proctection from mob clashes and thievery or an crime

Keeping in check with rescue personel involved.

In this type of situation our foremost plan would be rescuing lives and property so that it doesn't deal more damage. We have to also keep in check for health issues of rescue personel involved and the victims of disaster.

So we would follow the mix of both, the task oriented & relationship oriented leadership.

We need to move rapid response team to recover and help the strangled people arround the whole effected area. For this we would go initially with task oriented and while recovering we need to switch towards relationship oriented. Same case is with dealing with crimes.

When we move to rehabilititation of city we will follow Task oriented mainly.
