Question

A transport company has two types of trucks; Mack S375 and Chevrolet R28s. Macks have a refrigerated capacity of 15 m3 and a non-refrigerated capacity of 45 m3 while R28s have the same overall volume with equal sections for refrigerated and non-refrigerated stock. A grocer needs to hire trucks for the transport of 4,000 m3 of refrigerated stock and 3,000 m3 of non-refrigerated stock. The cost of renting a Mack is $350, while the cost of renting a Chevrolet is $400. How many trucks of each type should the grocer rent to achieve the minimum total cost?

Explanation / Answer

Ans:

Cost of renting a mack is lower, hence Co. should hire maximum number of Mack Trucks.

Maximum number of Mack trucks for hire = non-refrigerated stock 3000 m3 / 45 m = 67 Tucks

Refrigerated stock transport by Mack turkcs = 67 Trucks * 15 m = 1005m

Hence reaminng Refrigerated stock = 4000 m - 1005m = 2995m

Hence Chevrolet truck to be hired = 2995 m / 30 = 100
