Question

A production process at Day Manufacturing is shown in the figure below. The drilling operations occurs separately and simultaneously with, the sawing and seeding operations. A products needs to go through only time of the three simultaneously operations (The operation are in parallel) is the bottleneck. The process time of that overall system is minutes per unit (round your response to the two decimal places) The process cycle time of that overall system is minutes per unit (round your response to the two decimal places) If the firm operations is hours per day, 20 days per month, the monthly capacity of the manufacturing process is units (enter your response at whole number).

Explanation / Answer

(a) The bottleneck machine will be Welding machine since its previous machines minimum production is 2.4 units / hr where as welding machine can only produce 2 units/hr there by limiting the production (b) Process time of the overall system Time taken to produce a unit from Sawing machine = 1/6 hr = 10 minutes Time taken to produce a unit from Sanding machine = 1/6 hr = 10 minutes Total time = 20 minutes since these are sequential processes Time taken to produce a unit from Drilling machine = 1/2.4 hr = 25 minutes Since drilling process is parallel to other two, it will occur simultaneously, so total process time = max (20, 25 ) = 25 minutes Time taken to produce a unit from Welding & Assembly= 1/2 hr and 1/0.7 hr respectively . So, total time = 30 minutes + 85.71 minutes = 115.71 minutes Process time of the overall system = 25 + 115.71 = 140.71 minutes (c) Process cycle time of the overall system = 140.71 minutes (d) If the firm operates 8 hours per day, 20 days per month, total time available = 20 * 8 * 60 = 9600 minutes Monthly capacity = 9600/ 140.71 = 68.22 units = 68 units approx
