Question
1Your company is interested in choosing one of four possible devices (A. B. C, or D) to perform a paticular task. You would like the device to perform the task in 0.33 seconds. Data for the devices are provided in the table below. Calculate the G index for each device. Explain what additional information you would like to obtain before choosing which device to purchase. Which one(s) are viable choices with just the information below? Unit Cost $1,000 150 175 250 145 Std. Deviation/ second 0.061 O.0S5 0.054 0.059 DeviceExplanation / Answer
Process capability index, cp can be defined as
Cp = USL -LSL / 6 xstandard deviation
Value of cp depends on the allowable tolerance limits above and below the mean value.
We assume that the allowable limit is +-10% of mean
Thus, the USL = 0.33+0.1x0.33 =0.363
and LSL = 0.33 -0.1x0.33 = 0.297
Thus, the USL-LSL value will be 0.363-0.297 =0.066 for all devices.
Cp for device I
= 0.066 / 6x0.061 = 0.18
Cp for device 2 = 0.066 / 6x0.055 =0.2
Cp for device 3 = 0.066 /6x0.054 =0.203
Cp for device 4 = 0.066 / 6x0.059 = 0.1864
The additional information needed is the allowable tolerance limit for the product specifications. This will help to decide on the exact value of Cp and the appropriate choice of device to meet the quality goals. As we see that all devices have nearly same value of cp, the device B seems to be the most value for money device, that offers better quality at lesser premium ( Its Cp value is slightly less than that of C which costs $75 more)
