Geofence, in simple terms, is a virtual boundary, which is created using GPS technology, by a software company to clearly identify the geographical area within its purview. There are various advantages of geofencing but it has one major disadvantage of privacy hampering. Through the use of geofencing application, any individual can be tracked within the limits of its digitally created perimeter. This tracking will be happening without the subject’s knowledge. The whereabouts of an individual can be used to commit various crimes like robbing, kidnapping, assaulting, etc. Terrorist organizations can use this geofencing application to keep a tab on the eminent personalities of the country and their safety can be jeopardized.
If there is a probability of global conflict or crisis situations, specially authorized bodies can use this technology and can breach an individual’s privacy. However the data collected by this beaching must be kept secret and must not be revealed without taking proper approval of the subject.
