Explanation / Answer

Semipermeable membrane bag containing a 30% sugar solution is placed in a beaker of pure water. The membrane acts just like a plasma membrane in a cell as you have been studying.

1. This is an example of Osmosis.

2. Movement through semi permeable membrane is always osmosis. This is the characteristic feature of osmosis. In osmosis there is a movement of solvent from less concentrated solution to more concentrated solution

3. water will enter into the bag as the bag is 30% saturated with sugar.

The cell membrane of a nerve cell keeps 14 times as much sodium outside as inside.

1. Active transport

2. Because there is utilization of energy i.e. ATP molecule in this process as the molecules flow against the concentration gradient.

3.   Na + ions will go outside

An Elodea leaf is placed in a salty solution.

1.  Diffusion is the underlying process

2.  Elodea losses water, underlyinf process is diffusion of water from a high concentration inside the plant to a low concentration of water in the salt solution

3. Water will move out from elodea leaf to outside salt solution

A human blood cell is placed in pure water.

A red blood cell placed in water will get burst. The red blood cell is hypertonic than to the pure water. Water will enter the cell via osmosis, and the cell will burst

A white blood cell engulfs a bacterial cell.

1. Phagocytosis is the process involved

2   it is the process by which white blood cells engulf the foreign bodies entering human body to prevent infection.

3. the bacterial cell will be phagocytised by the white blood cell
