Question
I need a discussion response to the below post for my Business Leadership class
Think of a problem situation you would like to change at work, at school, or at home and
describe how you would frame the topic and approach the change using appreciative inquiry.
The problem I would like to change is at home. I have nice plants and shrubbery in my
yard, however I sometimes get chipmunks and squirrels that dig up my lawn or munch on the
vegetable garden. Approaching this problem and solution with appreciative inquiry involves four
stages, discovery, dream, design, and destiny (Daft, R.L., 2017).
Discovery stage involves the realization of my beautiful front lawn that looks good to
someone who drives by my home. The backyard lawn is also nice and has lots of shrubbery,
birds and garden plants that make it feel like a hideaway. Dream stage involves me walking
around our back yard, from one side to the other and not seeing any small holes in the ground
from a chipmunk or a squirrel hiding in the tree, or either eating my garden plants. The design
phase involves me forming an action plan to rid my yard of chipmunks or squirrels. My plan is
going to involve a few traps so that I can relocate them to another spot once they are caught. This
plan is going to make my yard just as it should be without any chipmunks or squirrels digging
holes or munching on my garden plants. Destiny phase involves my completing regular lawn and
garden maintenance to monitor the problem. If a set the traps in the next week or two I might
catch one by surprise. Chipmunks and squirrels are smart and often avoid traps. I also am going
to monitor the traps and may have to take a different strategy however it is easy enough to fix the
problem with effort and persistence. A lawn without chipmunks or squirrels protects the
home and maintains my garden plants before harvest.
How could you increase the number of novel and useful solutions you can come up with to solve this problem? I would have to consider all the tools for helping people be more creative at problem solving (Daft, R.L., 2017. The five steps involve facilitating brainstorming, promoting lateral thinking, enabling immersion, allowing pauses, and nurturing intuition (Daft, R.L., 2017). The brainstorming for me involved going to you tube to see some videos of possible solutions. The lateral thinking with this problem involved how could I redirect the squirrels and chipmunks to an open field near my property. Surprisingly there is a way to redirect them from your property. Enabling immersion would involve me bring the garden undercover such as a greenhouse effect. I could relocate the plants to an enclosed area and that would immediately reduce the squirrel and chipmunk’s chances for food and they would move on. The allowing pauses has resulted due to my classwork and full-time job. I have thought about the issue however have not had time to get to it. Nurturing intuition involves the thought process after a season of plant growth. You reflect on what the squirrels and chipmunks eat most. You film them overnight, often when they do their most damage and think of ways they help the environment. In summary, each of these techniques by themselves or in combinations is good at problem solving. It is important not to criticize any idea for surprisingly sometimes a perceived very bad idea can turn out to be a very good idea.

Explanation / Answer
Here the problem is of routine nature. As this is pertaining to almost everyone as we all are living in natural environment wherein all kind of living animals presents. Squirrels and chipmunks are common when it comes to greenery or garden. To avoid them, you can plant something which they don’t like so that they may find their other suitable place to go. Like if googling out, came to know, that they don’t like the smell of daffodils, so you can plan to plant daffodils to avoid them. This would be natural and reasonable as this would not hurt them. So you can try this way. Some other options are planting garlic, hot peppers, Moth balls, or you can just spread cayenne pepper all over your plants to keep them away.
