Question
Please rewrite this answer in your own words. The major logistics functions include warehousing (storing their tangible goods while they wait to be sold), inventory management (maintaining the delicate balance between carrying too little inventory and carrying too much), transportation (choice of transportation carriers), and logistics information management. A manager might decide how many and what types of warehouses are needed and where they will be located, how much inventory to carry, and which of the five main transportation modes to employ (truck, rail, water, pipeline, and air), along with an alternative mode for digital products (the internet, or how to share information).
Explanation / Answer
There are various logistics fictions which go hand in hand to deliver the products in the desired quality to the customer. Some of the major nodes in a logistic department includes the following:
• Warehousing: Storing the products securely and in the such a condition that when delivered it is in the expected quality only. Storing large amount of goods mainly comes under warehousing.
• Inventory management: ensures that minimal cost is invested in keeping the stock securely ie. Extra sticks are not kept and only desired quantity is stored.
• Transportation ie. How the goods would be delivered from one node to the another and lastly logistics information management.
Now this is the job of the manager to decide and optimise the usage of each head ie. The best and cost effective transportation should be chosen and this has to be decided by the manager, the amount of inventory to be kept, how to share any information internally or externally etc. are all jobs of a manager which are done to ensure that the organisation as a whole grow and prosper.
