Question
There are five principles that are covered in the reading this week. If you had to isolate one of these as being the most critical to success, which one would it be, and why? Also consider which one of these you feel is the least important.
I'd also like to get your thoughts on the difference between ethical and legal negotiations.
Principle 1. Reciprocity:
Would I want others to treat me or someone close to me this way?
Principle 2. Publicity:
Would I be comfortable if my actions were fully and fairly described in the newspaper?
Principle 3. Trusted friend:
Would I be comfortable telling my best friend, spouse, or children what I am doing?
Principle 4. Universality:
Would I advise anyone else in my situation to act this way?
Principle 5. Legacy:
Explanation / Answer
In my views, Publicity is the most critical to success among the given 5 factors. This is because, any individual, if having fear of his actions going public, will only act in the most ethical way. If the actions are backed by morality and ethics, then there is no probability of facing any kind of downfall. Also if the person is ethical, he will be able to revolutionize his thoughts more appropriately as he will not have the fear from anyone. Publicity will also make his actions become a source of inspiration for others. So he will be motivated to work hard for the recognition of his work.
The principal, which is least critical to success is Trusted Friend. In my views, I feel the domain of this principle comes under that of publicity only and this principle does not have an identity or criticality of its own.
Any negotiation act can lead to ethical dilemmas. Ethical negotiation is one in which the result of negotiation is based on the chosen side of the ethical dilemma. The negotiation process is ethical in perspective and tries to provide social good.
Legal negotiation, on the other hand, treats law on priority. Even if the society is suffering due to the decision taken, if the decision is abiding law, then the negotiation proceeds in its direction.
