Question
Dr. Chales Jones is a highly respected medical researcher at a highly respected unversity whose research is focused on treatment and cures for infertility. Over the past five years, Dr. Jones received several million doallrs in granot money as well as consulting fees from several pharmaceutical manufacturers which produce the types of drugs sstuded in the research. He responded (truthfully) to questions concerning the grant money and consulting fees as follows, "My interests are solely in the advancement of medical treatment through rigorous and objective study. I would not allow my research to be compromised in any way in exchange for funding." Does Dr. Jones have a conflict of interest?
PLEASE answer YES or NO? However, please explain your answer?
Explanation / Answer
I do not think Dr. Jones have any conflict of interest regarding this. His vision is very clear and that is, to utilize the grants towards the advancement of medical treatment. Had he completely rejected the idea of reception of grants to fund his research activities but yet was compelled to do so, then in such a case, there would have been a provision of conflict of interest. However, in the above case, Dr. Jones is not denying the fact that these funds have facilitated him to continue with his research activity. He is only trying to emphasize on the fact that he is stern with his ethical values and that he shall not compromise with his research contribution in lieu of any grant.
