Question
According to Blahová, and Knápková, 2010, when a company fails to execute its strategy, managers should not think about restructuring its processes. Fundamentals of good execution start with clarifying decisions right and making sure information flows where it needs to go. If managers get those right, the correct structure and motivators often become obvious. Successful implementation of a strategy requires an involvement of whole organization. CEOs are generally open to the idea of the strategy process and they are aware of the fact that the execution is critical to success. It is mostly the implementation that creates obstructions. There are several obstacles that can harm the successful implementation. Do you think that, using right methods, frameworks or timing may reduce or minimize them at all? Yes, the obstacles to successful implementation of strategy can be minimized, if not eliminated, by using the right methods and right framework.
The right framework and method should include the following elements – providing leadership, communicating, managing the change process, and encourage and reward supportive behavior.
Leadership is the most important pillar of the framework. When a new strategy is being implemented then support from leadership is must as it drives across the importance of the strategy and the need for its implementation. Communication helps in overcoming all uncertainties. Implementation issues will be ironed out as communication is done with regards to what will be done, why it will be done, how it will be done and what will the expected timelines be. Thirdly the change process will have to be managed effectively.
Cross functional coordination will also be required to ensure smooth implementation of strategic initiatives. This will help in matching of different departments within an organization and ensuring that the separate functions work together and not against each other.
