. Scenario: Suppose you are the manager of a consulting firm that designs and produces custom software solutions for your clients. To accomplish these tasks you supervise a staff of 100 programmer/analysts. For reasons dictated by the needs of your clients, and by the nature of your business, you offer and sell two separate services, technical design specifications (a document describing how best to solve a client's problem) and actual implementations (in the form of hardware and software) Staff Members Staff Members Design Projects Implementation Assigned toAssigned toC Design Projects Implementation Completed Projects Pro 100 75 Completed 15 12 25 50 75 100 20 35 45 25 a) What happens to the curve if the programmer/analyst union bargains for reduced work hours and 2 weeks additional vacation per year? b) What happens to the curve if 1/2 of the employees participate in a certification program which increases their productivity in design? c) What happens to the curve if a new software program reduces time spent implementing solutions?

Explanation / Answer

Custom Software Solution (Design and Production)

Services offered to clients:-

Situation 1: If programmer/analyst union bargains for reduced work hours and two weeks additional vacation per year.

In any organisation, the productivity depends upon the employees, the efforts or hard work put in by them towards their work, team work by the employees, seriousness towards their work and in order to increase the productivity, employees should be happy and they can be happy by movtivating them, providing them incentives, bonus, etc. Employees the the backbone of any organisation. Generally in an organisation an employee works for about 9 hours in a days out of which the effective labour hours are about 4-5 hours, and 1 day off in a week is allowed. sufficient leaves (may be it is casual or medical) are provided by the organisation to every employee, and beyond that if an employee asks for more leaves or reduced work hours then it will definately affect the productivity and the organisation would not able to meet its targets on time and accordingly it will affect the client expectations. Moreover 2 weeks additional vacation per year is very crucial for an organisation to allow to each and every employee, it will hamper the work and will mot be able to meet the client's expectation.

The curve will bend downwards, if the programmer/analyst union bargains for reduced work hours and 2 weeks additional vacation per year is allowed to each and every employee of an organisation, the productivity will reduce, and will not be able to meet the client's expectation.

Situation 2: If 1/2 of the employees participate in a certification program which increases their productivity in design.

In an organisation, when an employee start to learn something new, then the productivity is less as compared to the already learn things i.e the learning curve. No matter the certification will improve the quatity of design and the productivity will improve later on when the employees will become an expert in the design. In the current situation the whole emplyees are not undergoing the certification program rather only the half of the employees are only participating in the certification program will will incrase their productivity in design.

The curve will remain parallel to the productibity because the 1/2 of the employee will work accordingly and the 1/2 of the employee who are participating in the certification program when join, will double their production as compared to the earlier and as such it will not affect the production, the roduction will remains the same, and in the long run it will increase its production.

Situatuin 3: If a new software program reduces time spent implementing solutions.

New software program is all over a new concept for the employees, firstly they will learn how to work on it i.e how it would be helpful in implementing solutions, and once the employees become expert in it, it will definately improves its productivity. Learning new things will definately takes time and once learnt it will be very much helpful in increasing productivity and as well as the quality of design because in new software, the new designs are implemented as per the latest technology and implementing solution will be less time consuming and it will definately meet the client's expectation.

The curve will move in upward direction and thereby the productivity increases and the reduced time is spent in implementing the solutions, and this will motivate the employee and they work with full force to meet the client's expectation and target.

Case A:- 0 staff members are assigned to design projects, therefore, no design project is completed. In order to complete a desired project the work force is required, and in the present case since no work force is assigned, the project is not at all started. All 100 staff members are assigned to the implemetation project, wherein only 15 implementation projects are completed.

Case B:- 25 staff members are assidned in dsign project and 75 staff members are assigned in Implementation project, 20 design projects are completed and 14 implementation projects are completed.

Case C:- 50 staff members are assigned in design project and 50 staff members are assigned in implementation project, 35 design projects are completed and 12 implementation projects are completed.

Case D:- 75 staff members are assigned in design project and only 25 staff members are assigned in implementation project, 45 design project are comleted and only 7 implementation project are completed.

Case E:- 100 staff members are assigned to the dsign project and 0 staff members are assigned to the implementation project, out of which 50 design projects are completed and 0 implementation project is completed.
